A study conducted in Denmark found that children who are overweight or obese are more susceptible to develop foot, ankle, and leg injuries during engagement in physical activity as opposed to children at lower weights.

Researchers studied 632 overweight children who went to physical education classes for an hour and a half each week for two and a half years.

The group of children experienced 673 lower-limb injuries during this time. The children who were heavier had an average of 5.3 injuries for every 1000 “athletic exposures,” as compared to only 4.4 per 1000 for lighter children. "In the bigger picture the need to get all kids more active, and particularly overweight children, is imperative," sports medicine researcher Malachy McHugh said. McHugh was not involved in the study.

The condition known as plantar fasciitis is a common ailment experienced by many people. Physician Lee Sung-hun of the UN Oriental Medical Clinic says that approximately one in 10 people experience this condition, ten percent of the human population not a small number.  

Plantar fasciitis is often caused by changes in hormones, pregnancy and heavy physical activity. Physician Lee Sung-hun also notes that poor habits can contribute to it. What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis refers to heel and arch pain caused by an inflammation of the connective tissues on the bottom of the foot.

  • Ultrasound-guided technique with steroid injections into the plantar fascia.  This is from a relatively new and small study, but was shown to be effective in most cases treated.

New Studies on Treatment

According to groundbreaking treatment option studies, Luca M. Sconfienza, M.D. says that ultrasound with steroid injections was effective in over 95% of cases that involve plantar fasciitis. This process involves anesthesia and is a single process, out-patient treatment that was discovered to be highly effective. Luca M. Sconfienza M.D. presented her study at an annual meeting for the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA). -Running without shoes changes the motion of your running, as most running is done by landing on the heel of the feet.

The shoes that you see on sale at stores may be more dangerous for your feet than you might think. If you try on a pair that a lot of people have tried on before you, than you may be putting yourself at risk for developing several kinds of unpleasant foot conditions, especially if you aren’t wearing socks.

For example, some shoes at the store may contain traces of the human papilloma virus, an agent that can cause plantar warts to develop if it gets inside your body. Another common problem to watch out for is athlete’s foot, which is caused by a fungus that grows in damp areas. If, say, a lot of sweat has built up in a pair of shoes over time, then there’s a chance you could get an infection just by trying them on.

About Plantar Warts

Plantar warts are found on the feet. These warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) getting into open wounds on the feet. You can recognize plantar warts by a hard bump on the foot. They are usually found on the heels or balls of the feet. Plantar warts are usually not a sign of anything dangerous but do not ignore them if they do cause pain or embarrassment.

If you do have a plantar wart, you may notice some pain when standing but since these warts are not cancerous or dangerous, a podiatrist only needs to be seen if there is excess pain. Doctors can usually easily diagnose plantar warts. Although plantar warts don’t often call for treatment, there are options available. They can be frozen off, removed by an electric tool or burned off using laser treatment.
