According to Vail Daily, “80 percent of ankle sprains are a result of inversion, or inward rolling, of the ankle.” Painful inhibition is a response that occurs when outer muscles in the calf stop responding, and the inner muscles of the calf go into a protective spasm to prevent further damage. The muscle balance that results can affect the positioning of your foot that suffered a sprained ankle. This is the particular reason why ankle sprains re-occur in the same foot.

The Netherlands based Delft University of Technology and the Erasmus Medical Centre have developed a new 3D printed ankle device that will reportedly prevent ankle sprains. The EXO-L (short for External Ankle Ligament) is a patented, 3D printed external ligament that replicates the natural motion and anatomy of the ankle to keep it from twisting. The EXO-L seeks to support the ankle when there is a possibility it may be sprained while simultaneously providing freedom of movement. The device is positioned just above the ankle, over the Achilles tendon, and is kept in place by strapping into a special patch on the outside of the shoe. The EXO-L remains inactivated for as long as the ankle’s ligaments remain within the normal range for the sport or activity being played.

Unfortunately for NFL player Dee Milliner of the New York Jets, his shot at a brand new season ended after sustaining a high ankle sprain. Milliner now faces four to six weeks off the field to ensure a full recovery from his injury. Official details of the diagnosis are yet to be announced; however, the injury’s severe swelling is indicative of at least a Grade 2 sprain.

The athlete will unfortunately not partake in the Jets’ first game of the regular season to ensure full recovery from his injury. Most likely covering for Milliner during this period will be cornerbacks Antonio Allen and Ellis Lankster. “We feel confident that it’s healing nicely,” commented Jets coach Rex Ryan on Milliner’s condition.

Gymnast Returns After Lisfranc FractureAlley Riedel a junior gymnast, suffered a terrible injury during a performance she rehearsed many times before. During the routine, Riedel’s body counter-rotated, resulting in her momentum twisting and landing in an abnormal manner.

Riedel’s coach from to help her off the mat as a trainer examined her injury. Riedel suffered a Lisfranc fracture, in which metatarsal bones are displaced from the tarsus. Fortunately, after a much recovery time Riedel was able to return to her sport. “I was so thrilled. Coming back from this injury, I wasn’t really expecting to make it to state,” said Riedel.

Sport Related Foot and Ankle Injuries 

Foot and ankle injuries are a common occurrence when it comes to athletes of any sport. While many athletes dismiss the initial aches and pains, the truth is that ignoring potential foot and ankle injuries can lead to serious problems. Jordan Spieth Endures Ankle Injury during Farmers Jordan Spieth went off on a bogey-free 63 at Torrey Pines, but with that he also injured his ankle which caused him to slide 10 under to a T-19 finish at the Farmers Insurance Open.

"My ankle's pretty messed up; I felt it the second day on the back nine and I just kind of . . . I guess from there I just stopped loading as well on it and I started missing fairways," Spieth said. "All in all, I had no control over the golf ball today whatsoever with any club. It was tough."  

The 20-year-old couldn’t pinpoint the origin of the ankle injury and shot 71 on the South Course before scoring four shots worse in both weekend rounds.  "I don't remember where, it just started hurting; stepped wrong somewhere," said Spieth, who won last year's John Deere Open.

Playing Sports with Foot Injuries

Many types of foot injuries affect athletes over the course of their athletic career. Despite their setbacks, many of these athletes will continue to play with mild foot injuries and attempt to ‘push’ through the pain. In order to be able to prevent injuries, it is important to stretch before any activity, wear proper footwear and replace shoes as needed. Some of the foot injuries athletes are at risk for include:

  • Turf toe- upward bending of the big toe outside normal range of motion

  • Overpronation- excessive foot movement during gait

Ice is often used to reduce swelling and inflammation while applying a compression bandage can help reduce pain and stress on the foot.
